1% PLASTIC TRANSITION 2027

Less Plastic. Less Waste. A More Sustainable Future.

At Somic, we believe that caring for your skin shouldn't come at the expense of our planet.

As a small-batch Australian skincare company, we have always believed in thoughtful production, responsible ingredient selection and minimising unnecessary waste.

Now, we're taking our environmental commitment even further.

Our 2027 Vision: Just 1% Plastic

Somic is working towards an ambitious goal: transitioning to packaging made from 99% plastic-free materials, with the remaining 1% reserved for essential components such as bottle pumps.

Our ambition is to become an industry leader in reducing plastic within skincare packaging, proving that premium skincare and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

We recognise that achieving this vision will require innovation, investment and careful planning, but we believe it is an important step towards a more sustainable future.

1. A New Generation of Biodegradable Packaging

In 2027, Somic plans to transition its entire 50ml product collection to innovative new biodegradable packaging technology.

Our goal is for these containers to be fully biodegradable under verified disposal conditions, significantly reducing our reliance on conventional plastic packaging.

This transition represents an exciting step towards creating skincare products that are as considerate of the environment as they are of your skin.

2. Glass First, Plastic by Choice

Somic has already begun transitioning many of its products to glass packaging.

Glass offers a durable, reusable and widely recyclable alternative to conventional plastic containers.

However, we understand that glass isn't suitable for every environment or customer.

For those who prefer lightweight or shatter-resistant packaging, we intend to offer empty plastic containers as an optional alternative.

Our philosophy is simple: make glass the standard, while giving customers a practical choice.

We will continue to encourage customers to reuse and refill their existing containers wherever possible, helping reduce the need for unnecessary new packaging.

3. Rethinking Our Shipping Materials

We are transitioning away from conventional plastic bubble wrap towards more environmentally responsible protective packaging.

Our focus is on materials that protect our products during transport while reducing unnecessary plastic waste.

We will continue to assess our shipping materials and prioritise packaging that is reusable, recyclable or responsibly sourced.

As our glass packaging collection grows, we recognise the importance of finding protective shipping solutions that balance environmental responsibility with the safe delivery of our products.

4. Responsible Use of Existing Packaging

Sustainability isn't just about what we introduce. It's also about ensuring that existing materials don't go to waste.

Like many small manufacturers, Somic has historically been required to purchase packaging in large minimum order quantities.

As we transition away from conventional plastic packaging, we are committed to responsibly using our remaining inventory rather than discarding perfectly usable materials.

Our excess 100ml tubes will be repurposed into smaller promotional minis, allowing customers to discover Somic through samples and marketing initiatives. We will also offer special promotions on existing packaged products as we gradually introduce our new packaging formats.

As an interim measure, we have also sourced unbranded 50ml tubes to maintain product availability while we await the introduction of our innovative new biodegradable 50ml tubs in 2027.

This temporary solution allows us to continue serving our customers without committing to additional large quantities of conventional branded packaging that would soon become obsolete.

We recognise that transitioning to more sustainable packaging takes careful planning, particularly for a small Australian manufacturer.

We believe using what we already have, making thoughtful purchasing decisions and minimising unnecessary waste is far more responsible than discarding usable packaging simply to accelerate a transition.

5. Small-Batch Production, Less Unnecessary Waste

Our commitment extends beyond packaging.

Somic will continue to prioritise small-batch manufacturing, thoughtful ingredient sourcing, refill opportunities and responsible production practices.

By manufacturing locally and carefully managing our inventory, we aim to reduce unnecessary production waste while maintaining the quality of our skincare.

We also believe that encouraging customers to refill and reuse their existing containers is an important part of reducing packaging consumption.

Our long-term goal is to create a more circular approach to skincare, where packaging is designed to be reused, refilled, recycled or responsibly returned to the environment wherever scientifically verified and practical.

Our Environmental Promise

We recognise that becoming a more environmentally responsible skincare company requires continuous improvement, transparency and investment.

There will be challenges along the way, and some conventional plastic packaging will remain in circulation while we work through existing inventory and introduce new technologies.

We believe it is important to be transparent about this transition rather than suggesting that change can happen overnight.

By 2027, we aim to create a Somic experience where conventional plastic is the exception, not the standard.

Our 1% Plastic Transition is more than a packaging initiative. It represents our commitment to questioning traditional industry practices, embracing innovation and making more responsible choices for the future.

Because beautiful skincare should leave a lasting impression on your skin, not on our planet.
